Plymouth PSB loss of power 23/06/15

In a reflection to the power outage at Exeter PSB^▸ , Plymouth has suffered one today causing signalling outage between Totnes and St German, inc Tamar Valley line, causing delays.

The power briefly went out at home for a few seconds, but came back quickly; however, BBC^» Plymouth sustained a major outage along with Plymouth PSB.

This was probably asked at the time of the Exeter outage but considering the crucial nature of this equipment, is there not a standby generator for such occurrences? Or am I being far too simplistic?!

Plymouth Panel has a standby generator. It used to be tested every 4 weeks. No idea why it didn't cut in today Shocked

Stand-by generators even when tested regularly are notorious for not working when you really need them! Mechanical plant just doesn't like sitting around doing nothing.

Alternatively could the outage have damaged the switchgear?

would a surge of electricity cause a problem or would the system have a surge protector.

I rember a few years ago there was an inspection at derriford hospital where they found out the fuel tank for the generator was empty! could this have been a factor with plymouth panel?
