Trains between Bristol Parkway and Cheltenham Spa cancelled after man gets hit on line

Travel chaos is likely to set in for rail commuters tonight after all train lines between Bristol Parkway and Cheltenham Spa have been blocked.

The lines have been closed after a man was hit by a train close to Yate railway station shortly before 2pm today.

Just after 2pm, First Great Western Tweeted: "Due to a person being hit by a train between Bristol Parkway and Cheltenham Spa all lines are blocked."

They also revealed that train replacement coaches have been requested to transport passengers between Bristol Parkway and Gloucester.

People wanting to use the service are advised to check firstgreatwestern.co.uk/travel-updates.

A First Great Western spokesman said: "We will provide updates as soon as possible. Those wanting to travel should keep an eye on our website for changes to the service."

A British Transport Police (BTP▸ (British Transport Police)) spokesman said: "We were called to the line close to Yate railway station at 1.53pm on Thursday, 25 June, after a report of a person struck by a train. BTP officers attended, alongside colleagues from Avon and Somerset Constabulary and South Western Ambulance Service. A man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are now working to identify the man and inform his family. The incident is currently not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
