Was browsing Open Time Trains and bored a Class 9 headcode running through Filton 

RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) states these are for the Taunton to Cardiff circuit, this week only
(Bristol Temple Meads - next trains)/from/TAU» (Taunton - next trains)/to/CDF» (Cardiff - next trains)/2018/01/02/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt" target="_blank">http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/BRI/from/TAU/to/CDF/2018/01/02/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

So why Class 9? To differentiate services operated by Cl. 166 Turbos?

Might it be related to the need to draw the attention of the signallers to it, in case of restrictions through certain platforms.

Yes, they're not cleared for one of the platforms at Newport yet, so have been coded '9' to draw the attention of that fact to the signaller.
