Perhaps the article give the answer: It is thought the trees prevented landslips on the steep embankment down to the railway line, and acted as a noise buffer against the noise of the trains. This is a complex area of geotechnical engineering so I cannot be sure what the effect would be in this particular instance. If we get a slip next time we have a wet winter then we might find out. |

Perhaps a whistle board should go up on the station side of Montpelier Tunnel. Two tone horns dozens of times a day will have the tree butchering residents crying out for a noise buffer. Network Rail can then plant some fast growing foliage to achieve that.

Two tone horns hooting a G and E flat mournfully are becoming a thing of the past. I suggest a special Montpelier minor version where the horns sound an interval a seventh and a augmented octave (octave plus half a tone) . I've just tried it on the piano and middle C to B above back to middle C and up to C sharp. There again, I could do it on the organ and choose the temperament ( most modern digital organs offer at least 8 of those) that makes it even more excruciating ! Looking for an emoticon that is covering ears, but couldn't find one, so this one will have to do.  |
