Villagers could soon be doing their shopping in a plastic bag-free zone under plans to overhaul consumer culture in Twyford (link below.)

A campaign is under way to rid village centre stores of plastic bags, with shopkeepers being encouraged to turn towards greener alternatives.

In a bid to turn Twyford into a model eco-friendly village, shop managers will be asked to invest in renewable and bio-degradable bags which do not damage the environment.

The campaign is being spearheaded by the Twyford Village Centre Management Initiative (TVCMI), an organisation devoted to securing funds for developing the community.

It has already drawn up a list of alternatives it hopes will encourage people to sign up to the scheme, from corn starch and sugar bags to reusable cotton sacks using vegetable ink printing.

It also hopes to secure thousands of pounds in grants to fund the move.
