For those with an interest in signalling there is a free talk in Reading in October which may appeal.

James Denny is a signaller in Network Rail’s Thames Valley Signalling Centre as well as a union Health & Safety rep. James cut his teeth on the steam-hauled and mechanical-signalled Bluebell Railway and has seen most variants of control systems in between. As well as managing the embryonic signalling & telecoms department for the Cholsey &Wallingford Railway, James is also a member of the Network Rail/Trades Union consultation group trialling Traffic Management, a component of the Digital Railway. James will attempt to give a whistle-stop tour of the history of railway signalling, right up to the modern day, where the Digital Railway and large portions of Victorian infrastructure make uneasy bedfellows.

Would love to go, but I can't get back home from Reading after a 9pm finish.
