German Rail (Deutsche Bahn) has used photos of picturesque German locations that mirror famous foreign tourist destinations to encourage Germans to holiday in their home country.

Doppelganger destinations sell staycations to German holidaymakers

German rail company gets 24% revenue bump using lookalike destinations to encourage domestic holidays.

Can you name some UK (United Kingdom) equivalents for famous overseas spots.

e.g.  (with help and experience with Lisa)
Magic Mountain, Orlando -> Snowdon
Alligator Alley -> the A14 in Lincolnshire
Daytona Beach -> Skeggy

Who but the most discerning (or sober) could quickly distinguish between San Tropez and Severn Beach?  Monaco or Clevedon?

I thought the first two pictures in the linked article (Arizona and the Rhineland) were somewhat reminiscent of Symonds Yat:

No longer reachable by train, of course (though, south of Monmouth, the old station at Tintern is still in use as a cafe):

Mont St Michel in Normandy and St Michael's Mount in Cornwall, although whether one is that much more famous than the other perhaps open to debate.

Sandbanks in Poole certainly wants to be in southern france!

The whole bay from Southbourne around to Studland is a pretty good substitute for a bucket and spade destination for the south of France and Spain. I spent a good deal of time at Bournemouth, Branksome and Studland when my kids were small. The only problem is that the temperature is usually between 5 and 15 degrees cooler!

Whilst in the general area, the view of Weymouth from the viewpiont at the top of the hill at Fortunsewell on Portland is very similar to the view from the top of Table Mountain, Cape Town

Cycling from Christchurch to Poole is enjoyable (Prohibited during daylight hours July and August). Recently "enhanced" by the view of out of work cruise liners off-shore. Best with a following east wind, Bromptons can have problems if there is too much sand on the path. Used to feature on inter-war railway posters.Recommended.

Ah ... good to see so many options. Perhaps wrong to look for Dopplegangers as every place is unique ... and. perhaps also wrong to look at lists in categories.

However, from Travel Earth I offer you the "most beautiful places in the UK (United Kingdom)" - Bamburgh Castle, Barfundle Bay, Buachaille Etive Mor, Chatsworth House, Cheddar Gorge, Dun Briste, Dunnottar Castle, Durdle Door, Fairy Pools, Fingal's Cave, Giant's Causeway, Glen Nevis, Glenfinnan Viaduct, Gold Hill, Hadrian's Wall, High Force, Kynance Cove, Lake Windermere, Langmull Beach, Lavender Fields, Llanberis Pass, Llanthony Priory, Llyn Dinas, Loch Ness, Mealt Falls, Micheldever Forest, Minack Theatre, Norfolk Lavender, Pen-y-Fan, Portmeirion, Rye, Sgwd Yr Eira, Smoo Cave, St Michael's Mount, Stonehenge, The Dark Hedges, The Needles, The Old Man Of Storr, The Royal Pavillion, The White Cliffs Of Dover, Tintern Abbey, Tresco Abbey Gardens, Whiteless Pike and Wistman's Wood.

And from Visit Britain's most visited lists I give you Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology; Blenheim Palace; Brighton Pier; British Library; British Museum; Canterbury Cathedral; Chester Zoo; Eden Project; Hampton Court Palace; Horniman Museum and Gardens; Houses of Parliament; Imperial War Museum London; Longleat Safari & Adventure Park; MAC Birmingham; Merseyside Maritime Museum; Museum of Liverpool; National Museum Royal Navy; National Portrait Gallery, London; Natural History Museum (South Kensington); Old Royal Naval College; Oxford University Museum of Natural History; RHS Garden Wisley; Roman Baths; Royal Academy of Arts; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; Science Museum; Serpentine Gallery; Somerset House; St Paul's Cathedral; Stonehenge; Tate Britain; Tate Modern; The Abbey Gardens and Abbey Ruins; The National Gallery; Tower Bridge Exhibition; Tower of London; V&A (South Kensington); Westminster Abbey; Windermere Lake Cruises, Bowness; ZSL London Zoo.  For 2021, may I speculate, that these places will have the impetus to attract visitors from within the UK barring a miracle recovery in world tourism.
