Good news, this week’s strike action has been suspended:

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said:

"Following extensive and wide ranging discussions through the ACAS machinery we have hammered out enough ground to allow those talks to continue. As a result this week's strike action is suspended although the rest of the planned action rema‎ins on.

"I want to thank our members and our reps whose unity and determination has allowed us to reach this stage today and we look forward to pursuing the important issues at the heart of this dispute in the next phase of talks. "

That is good news.......those RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) sabres must have got rusty for lack of rattling!

Each threatened strike will slightly increase calls for ATO (Automatic Train Operation).
Each actual strike will significantly increase calls for ATO.

Remember the London docks and the endless strikes therein ? And the result was the closure of traditional docks and the move to non union, cantainerised ports out of London.

And the coal industry strikes, and what happened to UK (United Kingdom) coal mining ?

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

I am not sure that was cause and effect.  The move to containerisation and larger ships was already happening due to costs regardless of the strike. The change was IMHO ('in my humble opinion') inevitable.

Should not really put the RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) and the Dockworks Union in the same statement, the RMT maid up of the National Union of Railwaymen and the National Union of Seamen both the NUR and NUS were at odds with Dockworkers Union the DWU accusing both the NUR and NUS of taking dockers work away.   The 'Inland Bonded Port' at Milton (Didcot) was planned as were others which the NUR and NUS supported but the DWU opposed, these inland ports were designed to take container traffic direct into the centre of mainland UK (United Kingdom) where they were Customs cleared.
