On Friday I went from Bristol Temple Meads to Ashchurch for Tewkesbury. An off-peak single cost £10.60. On Monday, coming back, the machine on the platform was out of order so I bought from the guard. I decided to get off at Filton Abbey Wood, it's not much further from home and would be a pleasant end to the journey. "£11.40" said the guard. "Are you sure?" I questioned, surprised. "It's only £10.60 from Temple Meads so I don't see how it can be more to Filton." He checked. We agreed it was bizarre. I went to Temple Meads instead.

Now I've just checked the cost of an off-peak single between Ashchurch and Bristol Parkway. It's £12.50! So that's:
£10.60 from Bristol Temple Meads
£11.40 from Filton Abbey Wood
£12.50 from Bristol Parkway

to Ashchurch. The nearer you get, the higher the price is. All are off-peak singles. What's going on?

Bear in mind that you can get off short - buy an Ashchurch to Temple Meads ticket but get off at Parkway.

This is one of things I have never understood, but here goes. In BRFares, the £10.60 fare for BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains) is valid for cluster Q066 at the Bristol end, and that comntains:
3213 PATCHWAY   3230 BRISTOL PARKWAY   3237 KEYNSHAM   3250 STAPLETON ROAD
3214 PILNING   3231 BRISTOL TEMPLE M   3245 BEDMINSTER   3380 YATE
3225 LAWRENCE HILL   3235 FILTON ABBEYWOOD   3246 PARSON STREET   

If you change BRI to BPW» (Bristol Parkway - next trains) or FIT you get that set of fares (with fares set by GWR▸ (Great Western Railway) and the CDS▸ (Off Peak Day Single [ticket type] (formerly 'Cheap Day')) at £10.60) greyed out, with the statement that "N.B. This group of fares is overridden by another". Then there is an active set of fares set by GWR (for FIT) or by XC▸ (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) (for BPW).

That's interesting. I didn't realise the BPW» (Bristol Parkway - next trains) fares were set by XC▸ (Cross Country Trains (franchise)). But AFAIK▸ ('as far as I know') there are no XC serving ASC▸ (Area Signalling Centre) from BPW!

There aren’t at Worcester SH/FS either, but they have managed to grab some fares to/from there. Hopefully GBR▸ (Great British Railways) will sort this ridiculous situation out by being the only fare setter

Fairly common on that corridor. Charlbury to Birmingham via Worcester has long been set by XC, despite the fact that (until the opening of Worcestershire Parkway) you'd never use XC to make that journey.
