One of my pet hates, and I have to metaphorically bite my tongue when I see it being done. On my brief journey the other day on a Crossrail train between Twyford and Reading I noticed that there were signs between facing seats asking passengers not to do this.(I'd just left a train from Henley where a girl was resting the soles of her shoes on the edge of the seat opposite.)

But I have to admit that I wondered about the size of the fine - perhaps there was more to the incident than was reported by the Chronicle?

Merseyrail are very zealous when it comes to feet on seats and taking action for it. Usually in the form of a fixed penalty of, I believe, £60. Failure to pay, or desire to be heard in court can lead to a trip to the Magistrates. It can also be straight to court if you have previously been given a fixed penalty for the same offence.

As for the size of the fine in this partucular case, it's likely related to income.

I've got to say I would've long forgotten this story if I hadn't seen Merseyrail officers walk straight past other people - many a lot more loud and disruptive than I was - sat with their feet on the seats dozens of times in the years since. They might be intimidating, but if I'm getting fined for putting my feet on the seats then they should be too.

I'm only recounting the story now after a man was in touch this week who "rarely" comes up to Liverpool but had done on Monday for a specialist hospital appointment and had fallen foul of Merseyrail enforcement officers in a similar way to how I did. The man said he had "caused no damage or obstructed any passengers" and said "a simple request to lower my foot would have sufficed", and when I was reading his email I found myself nodding with agreement.

More coach set should have two by two formations,then try putting your feet on the back of the seat in front of you.
