Took 30 mins to get two references for a bike booking, by telephone.

Original advance ticket from TheTrainLine.

Is there a better way ?

GWR (Great Western Railway) site is confusing. Gives a reference, but also says unable to book. Then on phone they say have space.

Absolutely, yes!  Use your local ticket office to both purchase your Advance ticket and get your seat and cycle reservations!

The very helpful ticket office lady at Axminster station reported many passengers turning up for trains that did not exist this week, during the revised timetable, so she posted on Facebook Axminster Notice Board the following:

Please please PLEASE check the train times be4 you travel!!! TRAINLINE ARE NOT CORRECT!!! DO NOT USE TRAINLINE FOR TRAIN TIMES!!! Please use official sites SWR» (South Western Railway - about), GWR (Great Western Railway) and national rail!!

And, unlike Trainline, they do not charge a fee

Bear in mind a booked space does not ensure the space is not rammed full of luggage.

Or to put it another way... a booked space almost guarantees it will be rammed full of luggage.  Sad
