Pass, Freedom ticket, Rover, Ranger, Season ... how many different names are there for multiuse ("unlimited journey") tickets ... and how do you find out which one's right for you?  For my home station, I did a matrix of what I think are all of the tickets of this sort on our line. Have I missed any?

Out of area day rangers might have been a thing... trying to recall if the Heart of Wales day ranger was at one time available from the likes of Bristol/Bath (for the price of the ticket + a custom add-on to and from Newport)

That's an interesting one.  It's a "day ranger" that is not unlimited journeys - it's a single round trip.  So it's a faux-ranger!

Valid for one journey around the designated circuit in either direction, starting at any station on the circuit.

Yes - outbound to a ranger / rover area with a regular return ticket to "there".   I have also extended a FoSS with a "Explore Cardiff and Valleys" - oh, help - not a pass, not a freedom, not a ranger, not a rover - an explore

Perhaps this field is in almost as much need of simplification as fares? Almost, but not quite.

... and a quick trip north to Shrewsbury. Useful. The ticket itself though is now rather less useable if starting from England as it's no longer valid on GWR (Great Western Railway) services, which negates the use e.g. of the very sparsely occupied early direct train from Paddington to Swansea via Chippenham..

A minutes silence might be in order for the North Wales Land Cruise train.
