Severe weather forecast (9 July 2008)

Severe weather is due to hit the Westcountry tomorrow, with up to 60mm of rain expected to fall in the worst hit areas.

Forecasters at the Met Office have put advisory weather warnings in place and are expecting heavy rain and strong winds. The Met Office is also liaising closely with the Environment Agency in case of flood risks, although no flood warnings are currently in place.

Just a thought does River Exe still flood the railway around Cowley Bridge Junction?

If it does then even if Okehampton Bere Alston were reopened then all rail links to Cornwall would be lost.

Perhaps some thought should be given to raising the track through this part of the Exe valley as well as sterngthening the sea wall.

Problems with flooding are now beginning to happen on several stretches of line on which FGW^▸ operate.

This from FGW website at 13.35:

Line problem between Swindon and Bristol Temple Meads.
Train services between Swindon and Bristol Temple Meads have been disrupted due to flooding.Short notice alterations and delays of up to 20 minutes may still occur.

Line problem between Westbury and Castle Cary.
Train services between Westbury and Castle Cary are being disrupted due to flooding.Short notice alterations and delays of up to 45 minutes can be expected.

Line problem in the Wootton Bassett area.
Train services between Swindon and Bristol Parkway are being disrupted due to flooding in the Wootton Bassett area.Delays of up to 45 minutes can be expected. Only west-bound train services are affected by this problem.
