According to the ATOC» (Association of Train Operating Companies see - here) website, if a train misses out any stops it counts as late.

"The PPM (Parry People Mover, or Pence Per Mile, or Public Performance Measure - depending on context) measures the performance of every individual passenger train against the daily timetable. Where a train fails to run its entire planned route calling at all timetabled stations it counts as late. Cancelled trains are also counted as late."

Many thanks for clarifying this for us and welcome to the forum Topham Hatt.
 There are some who would argue that it helps the next service the late running train is due to run but its no fun if the train you are waiting for speeds by without picking you up!

that is the reason they do it,take the delay/cancellation hit on one service to make sure the next service the set forms is on time,thus not getting fined for that aswell

I've never known a service do that without announcing it in advance.

I accept your point, John and Jim, but sometimes such announcements are indeed made at the very last minute:

Last night I was on the (25 mins late) 15:37 from Ealing Broadway & it was only once we were actually in Reading Station waiting to pull out that they announced it would now be non-stop to Oxford.  Result - mad panic & scramble to get off before we got whisked off to Oxford (I wonder if everyone made it - anyone who was listening to a personal stereo wouldn't have had a hope!) ... .

Occasionally, too, I've experienced on board train announcements being promptly contradicted by platform announcements at Bristol Temple Meads (bloody Digital Doris again!), causing no end of confusion!   Huh

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

Thats what you get when you have a computer running station announcements. Can't stand them myself as when things go wrong you cannot trust the information given. The station PIS (Passenger Information System) aren't much help sometimes either, especially at some of the local ex-Wessex stations which run on a quite a dated system I believe.
