Filton - Ellesemere Port

Here^s one that I think falls outside the Handy Hints.

I have to travel to Ellesmere Port in a couple of weeks, up Friday return Sunday, the fly in the ointment is the outward leg where I have to break the journey in Stoke and finish the journey on the Saturday morning. Start and finish will be Filton, albeit I^ll be returning eventually to Trowbridge.

The return leg appears cheap if I come back via Newport, the outward leg is the problem with the break of journey, will that have to be 2 separate tickets or is there a single ticket option? I do appreciate that I will have to get back to BTM^▸ (Bristol Temple Meads (strictly, it should be BRI) but BTM is a commonly used alternative)) on the Friday.

Any thoughts?

They changed the conditions of the old Savers when they renamed them, and you can now break your journey on the outward leg of an off-peak return.

You can break your journey and resume it on saturday.  However you must re start your journey on saturday by 12.00 and no further breaks of journey are allowed. Also you might like to print off the conditions on the national rail website to show to any tickets checkers you encounter

16. Starting, breaking or ending a journey at intermediate stations
You may start, or break and resume, a journey (in either direction in the case of a
return ticket) at any intermediate station, as long as the ticket you hold is valid for
the trains you want to use. You may also end your journey (in either direction in
the case of a return ticket) before the destination shown on the ticket. However,
these rights may not apply to some types of tickets for which a break of journey is
prohibited, in which case the relevant Train Companies will make this clear in their
notices and other publications.

I assume it also applies to singles as I'll not be buying a return. Interestingly the advertised fares from Ellesmere to Newport start at ^10, those to Filton via Newport start at ^32.

Except where TOCs^▸ (Train Operating Company) have retained the restriction. NXEC^▸ (National Express East Coast), Virgin, and AXC^» (Arriva Cross Country - about) still have blanket bans on outward legs of Offpeak.

Barry Doe of Rail has just pointed out the Virgin restriction, that they keep fairly quiet about apparently...

It seems rather odd that the restriction code for a Barnstaple-Leeds Off-Peak Return (which is set by AXC) says that you can... Perhaps whoever put that on their website didn't bother to look at the fares manual?
