There are numerous posts on the board about the merits/demerits of the various advanced rail ticket purchase sites on this board. Plus even more posts about the ludicrously complex fare structure. I have been wondering what happens if:

You purchase advanced tickets from a website possibly other than the TOC (Train Operating Company) you are doing most of the journey and you get your itinerary and possibly a reserved seat and it turns out you've been sold the wrong type of ticket which is not valid for part of the journey.

Who is responsible? Will you be surcharged? Assumming, of course,  you travel on the trains given in the itinerary.

It must happen because I can't believe all the sites are simultaneously correctly updated with new restrictions on all trains at the same time.

It will depend on what you have.  If you have a seat reservation for a ticket that is not valid then your ticket will be accepted.

However if you show your ticket and say 'It said it was OK on the website' then that will not work.  You might get the reply 'Pull the other one'  Grin

I have been known to print out a web site's offer page when sold something that looks too good to be true. I have never actually had to produce the printout, mind you.  But in generallity, you cannot expect Jo Public to realise when a web site's in error and offering him a ticket it shouldn't ...

Every so often the LM (London Midland - recent franchise) website sells really cheap fares!

e.g. LM only fares with a reservation on a VT (Virgin Trains - former franchise (or, possibly, in a France context, Versement Transport - a payroll tax on employers to fund local transport) ) service! What would happen here? You HAVE to sit in your reserved seat and service (which happens to be on a VT service) but the ticket is not valid on VT!

Take LM to the small claims court for any surcharge by VYT?

you have to play around with it to get the option of first class...  the platform being used on the fgw website is the same as on south west trains website
