Being a regular traveller on FGW (First Great Western) in and around the Bristol area, recently I have noticed a Blue Network Rail freight train constantly travelling around in the Bristol area.  In the past month, there have been few days when I have not noticed it ( I aint a spotter, It's just hard not too notice ).

It has a small number of Blue Network Rail wagons and an EWS (English Welsh & Scottish Railway Ltd, now known as DB Schenker Rail (UK (United Kingdom))) engine at both ends.

What is this train and where does it go?  It cant go very far because its back again the next day.  Any freight train spotters care to answer??   Grin Cheesy Wink

This sounds like a Rail Head Treatment Train ( RHTT (Rail Head Treatment Train)) which runs in the autumn season as part of the Rail Head Treatment Train Programme. Many of the railfreight companies have a contract with Network Rail to facilitate the clearing of autumn leaves off the rail infrastructure. A combination of water canon and the application of sandite (a thick sand based paste that improves adhesion) will be used to improve the rail surface. This work in the autumn months is vital to ensure the first passenger trains each day can begin journeys with no delays. These trains carry 85,000 litres of water which is then used to jet spray the rails during the hours it takes to traverse the circuitous routes that criss-cross the area. There is one such train based at Bristol Barton Hill Depot covering the lines in the Bristol area.
