Could have been station staff up to mischief - there is a wide range of automatic announcements for virtually all occasions stored in those systems that station staff can activate, so I wonder if someone decided to put together a prank announcement for that train. I've spent 20 minutes waiting for a connection at a certain nameless station in the middle of the summer where the station staff (who at the location in question are unsupervised, don't have much to do for relatively long periods of time on a Sunday, and were showing off to their significant others) played all sorts of announcements including wishing all of their customers a merry Christmas and happy new year, various directives for the owner of car registration OOOO OOO to move it out of the way, and something about an Orient Express charter service being about to arrive on platform 2.

was the service that was supposed to be arriving at the platform, perhaps a different service was due on that platform, and passengers waiting were for a different service!

I don't think so. There's a standard form of words for automatic platform alteration announcements, and I don't think it involves the word "unfortunately"!

I'd hazard a guess that the XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) service was one of the ones affected by the fatality at Highbridge earlier in the day. The CIS (Customer Information System) at Bristol was all to cack today because XC services from the south west were being diverted from Taunton via Westbury until about 1430.
