British Transport Police officers investigating the death of a man who was his by a train at Warminster are appealing for a potential witness to come forward. Officers do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the man^s death on Friday but they are keen to trace a man who spoke to the driver of the train after it came to a halt following the collision at about 9.15pm.
BTP▸ officers were at the railway line at Hollybush Road, Warminster, alongside colleagues from Wiltshire Police and paramedics from the Great Western Ambulance Service after the train driver reported striking a person.
The body of a 41-year-old man from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, was discovered at the scene with injuries consistent with having been hit by a train.
Detective Inspector Mick Southerton said: ^The train driver applied the emergency brake and the train came to a halt further along the line, in the direction of Westbury, adjacent to Hollybush Road. The driver told police that after he had stopped the train, a man approached from the direction of Hollybush Road and asked him if he was okay before wandering away again. He was described as being aged around 50, wearing a red shirt and carrying a torch but the train driver was unable to give any further description. I am appealing for the man who approached the train driver to come forward as he may be able to help us piece together the events leading up to the death of the man struck by the train. I would like to stress that we do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding this incident but it^s vital that we locate and speak to man who spoke to the train driver as he may have information which can assist us.^
The train involved in the incident was the 7.23pm Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff Central service.
Police are appealing for the man who spoke to the train driver, or anyone who knows his identity, to contact BTP on 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident number 664 of 24/09/2010.
