Operator error by some accounts elsewhere.

Ran through catch points which are aimed down the embankment.  Definitely better than running into an oncoming train...

That's what catch/trap points are for pity they didn't have them at the end of the loop at Winsford or when that Pacer Spad and was run into by the following fast. Or at the end of the double track before Cowden

At least it didn't seem to destroy any signalling equipment. I think they learnt their lesson when a freight SPAD (Signal Passed At Danger - very bad!) the exit signal from the Up Ruscombe goods loop  (no longer there) and demolished the local interlocking room!

There have also been a couple of locos down the bank just before Wharncliffe viaduct from the Up goods loops East of Southall. You can still see the remaains of the ramp bulldozed to pull them back up.

I've wondered about the layout just south of Botley where the line singles. Viewed from Botley station you'd expect a run through would take out a DC (Direct Current) substation, the alignment seems just right...

Paul another consequence of privatisation all that painful accummulated knowledge of how to run trains was lost by sacking the engineers.
