Holders of a Youth Hostel Association membership are entitled to a 10% discount on Standard Class Off Peak, Off Peak Day and Super Off Peak tickets when travelling wholly with FGW (First Great Western).

http://www.yha.org.uk/yha-membership/benefits-of-membership/index.aspx

I called FGW Customer Services to confirm that Off Peak Day tickets were also eligible as the YHA website doesn't make that clear. According to CS» (Caledonian Sleeper - about), discount is available from staffed stations and should also be programmed into Avantix (Ticket Issuing System used on board trains) for purchases onboard when travelling from an unmanned station. Cannot be used in conjunction with other discounts however.

One year's adult YHA membership is ^15.95.  Could be a worthwhile investment for semi-frequent rail travellers who are not eligible for any railcard.

As well as posting messages onto existing threads, and starting new subjects, members can communicate with each other through personal messages if they wish.
