A shameless copy of a topic on RailUK Forums but its one that got me digging into a box of old vinyl singles tucked away in a cupboard.

I discovered a 7" Flexi EP (one of those ones that needed a 2p piece on the stylus head for the needle to stay in the groove) called Searching For Blake Hall on which was the song, 'Intercity Baby', by an indie band called The Kensingtons. A band I did a bit of roadie-ing for in my youth. They weren't destined for huge success - mainly performing in pubs and student unions in the south-west.

Frustratingly, I no longer have anything to play this 7" EP on. I showed it to my PC and 'computer says "no".  Grin So I went a Google-ing and found the song 'Intercity Baby' on youtube and as an mp3. Neither version is particularly good quality, but the lyrics should raise a smile for anyone who uses the train between Taunton and Gloucester (and beyond).

http://beemp3.com/download.php?file=4699674&song=Intercity+Baby+%26%23039%3B94 (There's a 'play' option under the download link after you enter the 'captcha' code)

So, that's my favourite train related song. What's yours?

Slow Train - Flanders & Swann. Thankfully not all the stations mentioned in the song were in fact closed!

For real railway songs you can't beat Dave Gouder, who was fireman at I think Kirby in Ashfield.

There's a very perceptive line about swapping a steam loco for the death trap cab of diesel which goes something like,

"A smash there's bound to be, they won't find very much of me."

There are also songs about dropping an 8F into a turntable pit which has the line,

"with chains and jacks and dirty words they got the damm thing out".

Also about the closure of the Pixton (GN) Branch and running away with an unfitted freight train.

Plus a very poignant song about an engineman's life which ends

"and 66 he's covered in soil."
