OK - who was down at Donnington Priory today, debit card in their sticky hand? Lots of big models on offer, and top of the bill a really very big one:

This 10 1/4" gauge one didn't sell, so you'll no doubt get another chance - maybe by talking to Dreweatts.

Is there any generally accepted boundary between large gauge model railways, and the smaller gauge working railways ?

Or is it simply a case of was it built for pleasure and interest ?, or in the hope of making a profit by carrying goods or passengers?

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

15 inch and above has all the rules of a 'full size' railway AFAIK (as far as I know).
