4  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with the Night Riviera sleeper - December 2014 onwards on: March 09, 2023, 08:15:53
A detailed report from Craig Munday on the CRS website http://www.cornwallrailwaysociety.org.uk/ go to March 2023 page:

“A particularly soggy night saw the Night Riviera in trouble at Treesmill, near Par. The loco 57605 suffered a loss of power and declared a failure. Single Line Working (SLW) was implemented Par to Lostwithiel over the down main line for the Voyager 2C80 caught behind. I was Pilot, and colleagues including Gareth Dood kindly assisted clipping up the points at Lostwithiel with no facing point locks (FPLs (Facing Point Lock)). Two facing crossovers to the movement made this procedure relatively straightforward.

It was eerie passing the sleeper train at a stand enroute, fully lit and warm with the 57 purposefully humming away on the front.

SLW was cancelled and arrangements made to propel the train back to Par to allow the coupling of a Castle set scrambled from Long Rock. The short bar coupling expertly coupled on by GWR (Great Western Railway)'s Steve Cocks. The delicate manoeuvering of the Castle set to stop inch perfect  to allow the coupling pin to be attached in appalling weather by Driver Keith was skillful to say the least.

The ensemble got away around 3am and was replaced by a Hitachi set at Plymouth for the journey onward.”

They appeared to have fixed it quite quickly as the 1725 arrival operated that day, plus all subsequent services (per RTT» (Real Time Trains - website)).
7  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Plymouth City Council proposes withdrawal from D&CRP on: November 11, 2022, 18:20:01
PCC (Police and Crime Commissioner) need to close a serious gap in their budget next year. Amongst a wide range of cuts is withdrawal from Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership. Others are to increase parking charges and cut subsidies for non commercial bus routes.
These items are contained within a consultation page here: https://www.plymouth.gov.uk/we-want-your-views-and-ideas

Sigh…..

From the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) Devon news today:

The number of passengers using a reopened rail service in Devon, which had been shut for nearly 50 years, is about double what was expected, according to train operator GWR (Great Western Railway).
The Dartmoor Line between Okehampton and Exeter reopened in November 2021 with regular services for the first time in 49 years.
GWR said more than 120,000 journeys had been made……….

11  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: ‘Live’ info on parking at tube stations on: August 16, 2022, 08:43:54
Feedback on my experience yesterday.
In the absence of finding any usage info, I opted to use Epping Station as it’s car park was far larger than any others on this line - 541 spaces. I arrived at about 10.30 to find THREE spaces free. And there’s me thinking that working from home was still the vogue!
The other confusing element was payment: NCP run the car park, so I set up the NCP app to pay.  BUT when I get there, the payment app displayed was Paybyphone…. You’d think the webpage would mention that wouldn’t you, but no!

And if that wasn’t exhausting enough, we had two grandchildren in tow….but we survived!!!
12  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / ‘Live’ info on parking at tube stations on: August 10, 2022, 21:13:29
Is there online info on space availability at tube station car parks? I’m wanting to park at a Central line station, Debden or similar, but want to know before I set off if space is available there, or other stations.
Thanks.

Whilst looking at the sleeper delay on journeycheck just now, I spotted this comment on RealTime Trains -
288.52  Reading [RDG(resolve)]
Service gains coaches here, stops to drop passengers off only
.........
+66

I'd never noticed it gains coaches at Reading - is this for an early morning Reading commuter rush into London?

And just noticed the down sleeper drops off coaches on its run down!

As Graham hinted, a loco is attached to the rear of the up train to haul it back to Reading for servicing. Then the down sleeper is top & tailed into PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains) in the evening, and the rear loco detached at Reading on the way down.

It might be glaringly obvious, but I cannot work out what OTDIH stands for  Huh
15  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Night Riviera to be reduced for eight weeks due to engineering work - Jan 2022 on: January 25, 2022, 08:31:51
Re: detaching at Plymouth.
There used to be a shunting loco kept at Plymouth Station for this purpose (also handling the postal, and other movements), with a shunting person. However this came at a cost to cover both morning and evening movements. Removing the sleeper portion for Plymouth saved this cost at the expense of customer convenience. The loco would remain attached to the sleeper carriage in Platform 8.
