Funny you might post that, but I was reminded in another thread about the "Basque-Y" of high-speed lines in north-east Spain where they've basically built most of a new standard-gauge route but they can't agree how the lines will reach the terminus stations so no tracks, overheads or signalling yet. So its not just us that can't finish things.

So its not just us that can't finish things.

Gareth Dennis pointed out the other day that those who compare costs per mile of HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) with LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) and other high speed lines miss the point that the major termini and their approaches are separate projects so those very large costs do not feature in the cost per mile figures.  Think about the difficult and slow approaches to Brussels Midi from the North.

My guess is any HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) announcement will be Wednesday afternoon is Sunak speech, although he may not say much because the speaker of the house of commons has warned the Government about announcing changes to policy out side the House of Commons

It's all a bit Machiavellian, isn't it?  I'm wondering if they've erected this problem so it can be knocked-over in an attempt to make the other side a bit silly for yelling about something that "never" existed.  Politicos and their advisers, of all stripes, are just all wrong 'uns these days.  Not worthy of trust, or power, for that matter.  And the media aren't bothered in anything other than cheering one side and booing the other, with the occasional scandal thrown-in.  Policy and principles don't get a look-in

It does seem a daft fight to pick. The source of the speculation is the Prime Minister's office. Whatever happens will upset a lot of people, most of whom had got used to the fact that HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) is being built. Any changes will be expensive, one reason why the cost has ballooned so far, with contracts needing to be paid off. It also runs the risk of overshadowing the rest of the Conservative Party conference when it starts, because no government minister is asked about anything else when they show their faces.

Today's Times has Birmingham to Manchester cancelled, but the line starting at Euston, and fifty quid per town money for paint. That will turn Northern Powerhouse into a Northern Brick something-house.

Edit: I've just been informed that the conference has been running for a couple of days. I wondered why Nigel Farage looked so angry on telly, even more so than usual.

And may be that was the game plan ..................

I revise my guess to the announcement will be in the Autumn Statement and will be more of a postponement like Euston

I was wondering that, although it doesn't seem to make much sense. Leaks about forthcoming policy changes usually come from the office of the minister or Prime Minister concerned, to either test the water or get someone else in trouble while retaining an aura of deniability. If it was meant to do either of those, it has failed badly. The only other thing that needs covering up may be the total lack of progress in everything else government is supposed to be doing, except possibly inflation. Hence ministers talking about the opposition's plans to tax or ban meat, have seven bins, add an extra head to all unicorns, etc.

Interesting brief from GWR (Great Western Railway) yesterday on the GWR engineering works and plans for works and service at Old Oak Common.  Lots of disruption over coming years, platforms on all four lines, but it sounds unlikely that everything (especially long distance) will stop there. Especially if (!!) it only goes as far as Birmingham, why stop trains from South Wales, Bristol, Taunton, Oxford, Reading  there when there are other direct trains from those places to Birmingham?
