GWR (Great Western Railway) provide car parking at many stations through APCOA (Car parking company used at GWR - controlled stations in the area).

At stations that don't have purpose built car parks (e.g. Reading), car parks are often former goods yards/sidings which have been converted. They use CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) owned and operated by GWR as part of the station infrastructure, giving the car park user the impression that their car is under surveillance while it is parked in a location that is often barely attended during the day.

However, if you are unlucky enough to find that your car has been damaged or broken into, GWR will only release information to BTP (British Transport Police) or the local police force. BTP will only request this subject to a set of criteria which are driven around frequency of offences reported or the seriousness of an individual crime. Typically, damage/theft from cars fall below this threshold and therefore no action is taken by BTP. GWR refuse to help victims or their insurers.

The stance taken by GWR is very different to that of many providers of both free (e.g. supermarkets) and paid for car parks and I'm sure will surprise many car park users.

I'll be parking elsewhere from now on, as my pocket is several hundred pounds lighter.

The multi-story station car park in Reading used to be connected to Reading Station and carry the "British Rail" logo. Not sure the situation since the station improvement when it was disconnected from the station. Since it was disconnected the options to avoid the "fragrant" stair wells is somewhat reduced, which probably indicates part of the problem.

When the footbridge was removed the gaping hole in the side of the building was actually blanked off with a giant size BR (British Rail(ways)) logo...

Probably saved quite a few quid matching the existing materials...
