This first appeared on the radar just about a year ago iirc,the idea is not a new one ,Saab/Scania trucks did try something very similar in the early 2000s and before that Saab GB^▸ had a demonstration unit using two of their cars ,an old 99 and new 900 which was one of the first Catalyst equipped models,the exhaust from the older vehicle was measured and then fed into the air intake of the newer catalyst equipped car and then measured a second time,it of course was very much cleaner,no surprise there you might think, however this testing was carried out in central London,and the air from the second exhaust measuring was in fact cleaner than that the fresh air that was feeding the older car in the first place !..

The two systems are not the same.
The earlier one treated the exhaust gases and claimed these to be cleaner than the surrounding air, which was the case if only certain pollutants were considered.

The equipment fitted to the bus is not connected to the exhaust. It is a simple air filter that removes fine particulates from the surrounding air. Such particulates are dangerous to health and removing them is desirable.

Neither system removes carbon dioxide which is the principle cause of climate change.
Carbon dioxide emissions would in fact be slightly increased due to the weight of the extra equipment.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU^▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.
