United Utilities has drawn up ambitious plans to lay a ^2.6 billion water pipe alongside the proposed HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) high-speed rail line from London to Birmingham and beyond to bring water from the North to the parched South.

Britain^s biggest stock market-listed water company said that it would shortly present its plans to the Government.

Under investment in the north's rail transport and now London wants to nick their water.  Roll Eyes Tongue Grin

Seriously though, if there is spare capacity (hectolitreage?) in the north then it may make sense to pipe some south, if the cost of doing so is justified.

If you are looking for spare resources then look to the North East (Kielder) rather than the North West (Lake District).

Thinking about the size of pipe they propose. That would do alot of damage if it burst.  Look at how much a 12" main caused on the Brighton line last year!

Idea...put HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) in the pipe, out of sight and use the HS2 trackbed for the water, which can double as civilised transport (canal).  Grin
