Cloud Cuckoo land time again.....

Other innovations required by the strategy include trains running when they were needed, rather than to a fixed timetable, to help ensure passengers had the least crowded trains possible. This is a world where the customer – rather than operational convenience – is at the heart of the rail transport strategy.

Portbury Docks branch looking South taken from the M5 Avonmouth Bridge cycle path?

We seem to have diverged into IET (Intercity Express Train) thread territory.  For the latest on that see here:

Apparently all Class 800 trains were stood down over the weekend of 16/17 May 2020, due to a special inspection being required following a cracked deflector shield being found on one unit.  This was a nationwide issue affecting all Class 800 users, not just GWR (Great Western Railway).

I picked out this snippet:

Each Elizabeth line station has over 50 km of communications cabling, 200 CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) cameras, 66 information displays, 200 radio antennas, 750 loudspeakers and 50 help points. All this technology needs to be fully installed, tested and integrated.

750 loudspeakers at places like Taplow may lead to complaints of noise nuisance from nearby housing, might it not?

I think they are speaking of the central section stations (pun intended) Grin

Interesting proposal to name the TBMs (Tunnel Boring Machines) to be utilised on the project: https://www.constructionenquirer.com/2020/05/15/hs2-opens-public-vote-to-name-two-giant-tbms/

Vote for your favourite name

Earlier this year, our contractor Align (a joint venture of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine and VolkerFitzpatrick) engaged with local schools in Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Hillingdon and asked students to put forward names of women who have made their mark on history through their achievements. Tradition dictates that in order to keep the tunnellers safe underground, tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are given a female name before they are launched. The women below were shortlisted and we now want you to vote for your favourite name for our machines.

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin
Florence Nightingale
Marie Curie

No.1. The signalling concrete cable route is only burried in the road surface.  Not very good practice, as it should be in a protected piped route with inspection chambers each side of the access road.

No.2 is Cardiff Central station.  What, platform sharing without any mid-platform signals/stop boards..... Roll Eyes
57  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Heritage railway lines, Railtours, other rail based attractions / Re: Preserved -> Heritage on: May 14, 2020, 07:46:53
Agree, "preserved" does imply preserved in substantially original condition. The fitting of replacement parts is often unavoidable, but these should be reasonably close facsimiles of the originals.
Many steam locos can reasonably be regarded as being preserved in substantially original condition.

However considering the West Somerset Railway as an example, the infrastructure is definitely "heritage" and not "preserved"
Electric lights, and concrete sleepers, and other features are appropriate on a working railway even if not original.

Err..... The GWR (Great Western Railway) had electric signal lights, motor points and concrete sleepers in the 1930s, so I think they qualify as 'Preserved'..... Tongue

Not quite sure which board to put this on, so moderators please move if neccessary.

Tricky one ... as it's Heritage I've moved it to "Preserved lines" which I should REALLY name "Heritage lines" though a number of lessons (such as staff forgetting routes really apply to all railways - heritage, national network and London / Newcastle city networks too.

Thanks for doing that, Grahame.

Appologies for that error, but my excuse is that when I posted the update I was sitting at my desk at home trying to work out some changes to the mechanical interlocking on an hi-tech GWR (Great Western Railway) 1908 pattern lever frame..... Roll Eyes Tongue

ETCS (European Train Control System) Level 0 Huh    If you added ATC (Automatic Train Control) would that make it level 1?

I ask as a baffled E&P Engineer

Yes it would, but it would need to be the GWR version of ATC Grin

Is there any other,  can just see a 44' 3" ramp would work at 125 mph

Interesting document on the GWR ATC here https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=19&ved=2ahUKEwjV6_iAlbDpAhWbVBUIHcGIACIQFjASegQIBBAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rmweb.co.uk%2Fcommunity%2Findex.php%3Fapp%3Dcore%26module%3Dattach%26section%3Dattach%26attach_id%3D953953&usg=AOvVaw1NVyPmiY3fex5c6T9LydM8&cshid=1589349951811925

Yes, it could be done with coded track circuits like the original 1968 Victoria tube line. Level 1 is nothing new.. Grin
