Indeed, Chris - but for future record it's better to note twice than not at all.

Especially at the present time, where relieabily on the line is shocking and exceptional (6 cancellations across the whole GWR (Great Western Railway) area out of which must be around 1500 services, 2 of those cancellations on Swindon - Westbury which is out of only 14 services)

But possibly carrying the fewest passengers in the area covered by the depot which is short-staffed.

How would you cancel services where a depot is short of staff? What would be your priorities?

Good question. I would probably look at passenger delay minutes(1), or even passenger delay minutes after the industry standard acceptable delay of 5 minutes on a local service or 10 minutes on a longer distance one(2).  You might even consider 15 minutes acceptable as the industry seems to do when it sets up "delay repay"(3)

Using your "never mind HOW badly you inconvenience people", you would cancel the Swindon train and run the Bristol train.

Using method (1), 50 passenger delayed by 2 hours to Swindon gives you 6000 minutes of delay. 150 passengers delayed by 30 minutes gives you 4500 minutes of delay. So cancel the Bristol and run the Swindon.

Using method (3), 50 passenger delayed by 2 hours gives you 5250 minutes of delay. 150 passengers delayed by 30 minutes also gives you just 2250 minutes of delay. So cancel the Bristol and run the Swindon.

Of course,
* the best way to fix the issue is to have enough da**ed staff
but that appears to be beyond out TOC (Train Operating Company).
* Second best is to step the frequency up to an approiate level - a train at least every hour on local and regional services.
* Third best is to spread the pain and cancel the same proportion of services on each line
--- we feel we're put fourth in line here on the Swindon -> Westbury line.  Better - just - than not being in line as we were a decade ago

They had enough staff to run the service when they were happy enough to want to work overtime & rest days. Now thewy aren't being allowed to employ more by their paymasters.

I suspect that they are actually looking at a) the number of pax being delayed; and b) the delay/repay actual cost of those being delayed. In both cases, you run the Bristol as that carries far more customers.

05:11 Gloucester to Southampton Central due 08:07

05:11 Gloucester to Southampton Central due 08:07 has been previously delayed, has been further delayed at Stroud and is now 14 minutes late.
This is due to a problem currently under investigation.

Most of the time recovered at Swindon and the few remaining minutes probably will be at Salisbury.  Expect on time at Southampton

08:11 Warminster to Swindon due 09:03 will be diverted between Trowbridge and Chippenham.

It will be delayed due to the diversion and is expected to be 10 minutes late.
This is due to a fault on this train.

It's 3rd September and this is first post here this month

For the record - 2 round trips out of 9 in the GWR (Great Western Railway) timetable ran on 1st, and none at all on 2nd.  Cancelled due to industrial action which the rail industry seems to think is fine, but it doesn't get passengers where they want to be, nor build confidence for the future.

Alterations to services between Chippenham and Westbury via Melksham
Due to a fault with the signalling system at Chippenham trains have to run at reduced speed on some lines. Disruption is expected until 18:00 03/09.
Train services between Chippenham and Westbury via Melksham may be delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.

Additional Information

We have received reports from Network Rail that several signals in the Chippenham area are not working as intended. Signals keep trains apart at a safe distance, like traffic lights on the road. Signals can fail for a number of reasons, including power cuts. The system is designed to fail-safe.
-
The signaller will stop trains in the Chippenham area to 'talk' the driver past the failed signals.
