Wilts and Dorset bus drivers vote for strike action

Drivers from the Wilts and Dorset Bus Company have voted to take industrial action over working conditions.

The company, which operates bus routes in Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset, has not yet been notified of any planned strike date.

The RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) Union said more than two-thirds of its 500 members voted in favour of industrial action.

Wilts and Dorset is to continue discussions with trade unions in a bid to minimise disruption to customers.

The RMT claims staff are facing enforced changes to shifts, leaving them to work "longer and harder hours for less in return for intolerable pressure".

A spokesman for Wilts and Dorset said: "Even if a strike was called, we can assure customers we will be running services and any disruption will be kept to a minimum."

Pancakes and ice cream with a Flemish beer? Seems like a perfectly acceptable combination to me. And perfectly acceptable to have tucked in before taking the picture. I did just the same on my recent trip with bobm on the FGW (First Great Western) Pullman.  Wink

I had to remind him.....  Grin

I haven't sampled the burger yet so will have to try to see if it was just a one off.  Interesting to note they do chips - I don't think I can ever remember them doing them before.  I assume they are oven chips - would they mess about with boiling oil on a moving train?

Trespassers warned to keep off rail track

From left, Brian Pound and Dave Peacey of Swindon and Cricklade railway warn about crossing the tracks

^STAY off the tracks before a serious accident happens^. That is the warning from volunteers at Swindon and Cricklade Railway.

They say they are constantly seeing adults and children crossing the railway tracks as a short cut into fields near Mouldon Hill.

Vice-chairman Dave Peacey said the problems were mainly happening on the southern side of the track.

^It is just sheer stupidity,^ he said.^People come out from behind the hedges, which means the drivers have to slam the brakes on, but what people don^t seem to realise is that if the trains are travelling at 10 miles an hour it can take 100 metres to stop ^ there^s no way they can stop any sooner.

^It^s an endless problem and we have got it all the time but it is probably only a handful of people who are doing it.

^We need to catch them and, if we do, we will be prosecuting because it is a criminal offence.^

In a bid to end the problem, the volunteers have put up wire fencing and warning signs but say trespassers have cut the fencing down and smashed the signs in a bid to cut a few minutes off their journey.

Chairman Brian Pound said: ^We see people walking dogs along the lines, lifting bikes over the fence and cycling along, holding their children^s hands and crossing the lines. ^We haven^t prosecuted anyone yet, but if we can catch them we will.

^We need to take a stand, we^d rather prosecute someone than somebody get killed.^

Dave said: ^We have to think of our crews. If something did happen, it would prey on their minds forever, but it wouldn^t be their fault.

^We travel that section of track all the time.

^At weekends we are up and down every hour, but we also go down there a lot for maintenance reasons so it is in use 24 hours a day.

^I know when people moved into the homes that back on to the railway, it was in their deeds that a railway ran along the back of their gardens so if they didn^t like us being there, they shouldn^t have bought the houses.

track diagrams are always very interesting (well I think so)

Totally agree - I still regularly refer to my ageing copy of the Thames Valley Trackplans produced internally by Network Rail even though it is getting woefully out of date in the Reading area!

Just to note for anyone planning on travelling on the Pullmans immediately after Easter...

From the 2nd to 5th April the ones up from Plymouth still leave at 12:01 and 12:55 - except on the 2nd when the 12:55 becomes a 13:03.

The two down will leave at 17:33 and 18:33 from Paddington.

The 12:01/17:33 will go via Bristol Temple Meads (not calling) and the 12:55/13:03/12:55 with their Westbury stops going via Melksham (also not calling  Grin)

There is a piece in the new issue of RAIL (715) - available to subscribers now and in the shops on Wednesday 6th Feb - that the 165 and 166 fleets are to get another refurb with disabled toilets fitted.

(As an aside the same issue also has a feature on the Night Rivieria sleepers)

I can vouch for the steak Brucey, slightly less so for the article.  I am not sure where he got the idea that the dining cars have been sitting in sidings for two years - they might have been on the east coast but certainly not on FGW (First Great Western)!

Just been catching up on some old viewing and stumbled across "The Restoration Man" series on Channel 4.  The episode last Thursday (31st Jan) was based on converting the water tower at Settle station into a three storey home.  Also has a bit of the history of the line and an appearance by Michael Portillo.  Will be on 4oD for a while.  Worth a watch.
6735  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Western Rail-Road Bill on: February 03, 2013, 09:37:06
Just heard a feature called "Yesteryear in Parliament" on Radio 4's Sunday morning programme Broadcasting House.

It recreates debates from past years as recorded in Hansard.

Today's was the Western Rail-Road bill, which despite it sounding like it refers to a line on the other side of the Atlantic was in fact the pre-cursor to the building of the line from Paddington.

It will be available on the iPlayer for a while - it is about 20 mins in.

The excerpt from Hansard it is based on is here http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1834/mar/10/western-rail-road#S3V0021P0_18340310_HOC_5

I wonder if HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) will be debated in the same way!
