And now a 153 ...

17:08 Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff Central due 20:38
This train will be started from Fratton. It will no longer call at: Portsmouth Harbour and Portsmouth & Southsea. This train will run short formed with 1 carriages. This is due to a member of train crew being unavailable.

I wonder how crowded that one was!

OK ... I thought that the class 153 was the only one coach train operated by FGW (First Great Western). Jim - can you shed any further light on this ... was it really a one coach train of some other type, or was the report incorrect?

Perhaps they're not - I've made a layman's assumption on this.

The only trains that are one coach run by FGW (First Great Western) are class 153.
Their trin from Portsmouth Fratton was a one coach train.
Asuumption made - it was a 153.

It could have also been an information error on their web site, or it could have been a 2 car unit with one car locked out of use for some reason.  "Staff Shortage" quoted.

I swear i've seen 153's cover that entire route before on arriving into cardiff, so maybe 153's are?

So digging around is required!

I do not know the facts on this journey but it will NEVER be a 153 as far down as Fratton because they are not permitted beyond Southampton, however they can be seen Southampton to Eastleigh to Romsey and can use this circuit legitimately.

A number of reasons may reduce a two car to one, lighting, suspension etc, but not staff shortages as our services can only convey passengers with both Driver and Conductor on board for safety.
