I know where it is, but not the apparently rather more important what's going on? - so I'll leave it for others to answer!  Grin

Haven't a clue where it is. What is going on well it's bull head track with a check rail so probably on a curve. The oil stains suggest it's served by DMUs▸ (Diesel Multiple Unit) or diesel locos which stop there long enough to drop oil.

Track and ballast both look as if they are due for renewal, otherwise haven't any idea.

That, together with my suspicion (subsequently confirmed!) that the location is Calstock, may resolve the mystery.

i have actually recived an answer today which seems logical, he belives its to help prevent derailments as its a very sharp curve and leads onto a viaduct can anyone let me know if this is the case
