Calling pattern according to timetable is: ^London Paddington ^Reading ^Taunton (Not on Sunday's) ^Exeter St Davids ^Newton Abbot ^Totnes (Monday - Friday, Penzance to London Paddington only) ^Plymouth ^Liskeard ^Bodmin Parkway ^Lostwithiel (Monday - Friday, London Paddington to Penzance only) ^Par (Not on Sunday's - Penzance to London Paddington) ^St Austell ^Truro ^Redruth ^Camborne ^Hayle (Monday - Friday, London Paddington to Penzance only ) ^St Erth ^Penzance

With the breakup through privatisation it is almost immpossible to work out how much money it costs to run a train.
Afraid to say this sentence is utter rubbish. It is a very simple calculation to work out cost per mile over a fixed period. Average cost per mile over a year is as simple as: Total annual expenditure/total annual passenger miles = cost per passenger mileTotal annual expenditure will be all the companys costs for the year, and total annual passenger miles calculated from ticket sales. Ticketless travel doesnt get included in the figure.

Well the human being *is* an animal so perhaps Sprog's first sentence is an unintended insult to other species.
To achieve the toilet conditions described, there has to be a structural problem in terms of what service is being provided. The same people travel by air. Perhaps study of how facilities are managed by airports and airlines could help here? No such appalling scenes as Sprog describes is evident at airports and planes.
I'm not so sure all the same people travel by air. For starters airlines would reject people if they turn up in such an intoxicated manner as some people are on train services I've observed, especially at the times of day the Poster mentions.

I was in Taunton some time in September 2008 and was walking down East Reach from the town centre to go home. I noticed across the road a police car pulling up with blue lights going just opposite the Esporta Gym. That section of road is ALL double yellow lines from the Traffic Lights down towards the Tesco Petrol Station. They all bailed out and went into Scrummys (Kebab Shop) I assumed to deal with a fight. Oh no, not at all. All 4 officers were ORDERING KEBABS!!! There was a Traffic Warden walking by who realised what was going on and very hastily gave the police car a ticket. Well when the officers came out food in hands their faces were a picture when they saw the ticket! Not sure if the traffic warden did it as a joke or not though... Think the traffic wardens back in 2008 were police employees. I know they moved over in the last couple of years from being police employees to council employees. Probably a joke.

grahame makes an interesting point on assumptions.
The guilty until proven innocent isn't just applied to railways and fare evasion in my opinion.
IT Technicians adopts a similar position when a customer brings a computer to the technician. It is common practice and good Rapport to ask the customer whats wrong with it, what they were doing when it happened and if they changed anything/installed anything.
Its also seems to be the way with many motoring offences. The registered keeper of the vehicle is guilty of many motoring offences, especially speeding and parking offences, unless they can prove they werent at the wheel. I once received a parking ticket for a vehicle I was keeper for whilst it was meant to be in for an MOT, the council told me I'd best pay it, and then pursue the garage who was MOT'ing my car for the cost. Turns out one of the mechanics had taken it to get a Burger King and parked on double lines whilst they were in the BK getting lunch!.

From http://www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/news/10061733.Train_company_helps_Redruth_girl_who_saved_dad_s_life_pick_up_award/An 11 year-old girl from Redruth who brought her father back to life when he stopped breathing has been given the VIP treatment by First Great Western (FGW▸ ). Nominated for a St John Ambulance First Aid Award, Maria Rowe and her family were invited to attend an award ceremony in London after the youngster saved her dad^s life. But the family couldn^t afford the trip. On hearing the news First Great Western offered to provide three complimentary First Class tickets for the Rowe's and, working with the Leisure Pass Group, were also able to offer three London Passes allowing free entry to over 60 top attractions. FGW General Manager West of England Julian Crow said: ^When a young girl like Maria has such presence of mind to remember her first aid training and bring her father back from the brink ^ and you hear that the family cannot afford the trip to London, it is a privilege to be able to provide tickets for them to travel.^ Maria was guided by a 999 call operator as she performed CPR on her dad John, following a heart attack last July. On the third cycle of resuscitation Mr Rowe, 65, started to breathe again before an ambulance crew arrived and took over treatment.
The Leisure Pass Group^s Retail Sales Manager Lyndsey Kirk said: ^The Leisure Pass Group is delighted to offer Maria and her parents London Passes to allow them to visit some of London's wonderful attractions. We hope Maria enjoys her very well deserved trip to the capital.^ The St John^s Ambulance First Aid Awards were held at the Lancaster Hotel on Monday 19 November. Maria was one of five finalists short-listed for the Guy Evans Award. edit - Didn't read what i posted, It appears press story is worded identically to the FGW press release posted above .

A bit of google brings up 01752 835777 for lost property. I'm assuming this goes to Plymouth rather than India, not sure if this will be any more fruitful.
The call centre doesnt need to call Bristol though, All items are electronically logged on a database, and they just type in a full description and it either brings up a yes or no. I'm sure I read this somewhere on this forum before possibly posted by CfN or BNM

On another forum I visit a very interesting point that has been asked, as the girl was a minor, would there be an element of child neglect from the parents? However my view having read through several reports today is:
It is a safety critical position, and if the guard breached safety then I am sorry to say guilty is the correct outcome. This is obviously subject to the guard undergoing correct training, and TOC▸ records showing he has undergone the training. I have worked in a safety critical position previously and it was made clear to me at start of employment that if the company can evidence I had taken the training, I am personally liable if my error caused any safety issue. The training was highly documented to cover the company back, and so the company would be able to proof they werent liable if i was at fault for an incident and I could be personally prosecuted.

As a verdict has now been passed, I will also pass my opinion. To say I am shocked with the verdict is an understatement. In particular, I find the second paragraph of this quote disturbing. How many teenagers lean on trains as they are ready to depart on a typical weekend? Speaking outside court, Miss Varley's mother, Paula Redmond, 41, said: "Christopher McGee will complete his sentence and return to his family. Mine is now gone forever.
"We have listened as our daughter was portrayed as being a drunken liability when, in all honesty, she did no more than what many teenagers do of a weekend - she went out to celebrate her friend's birthday.
"The only liability that night was a train guard whom Georgia had the catastrophic misfortune to encounter.
"For he had very little, if any, regard at all for our daughter and her safety."
Ms Redmond said her daughter was "an absolute joy to be around".
"To say she was a wonderful, amazing daughter would be a massive understatement," she added. I also find it disturbing as it is illegal for a 16 year old to drink alcohol, and also illegal substances in her blood, definitely something many I know never did.
