The Maritime Line celebration falls over the August Bank Holiday and a wide range of activities are in the pipeline.
They include an open day at Penmere Platform, a major exhibition at The Poly in Falmouth and the possible visit of a steam locomotive.
Two meetings have already been held to come up with and discuss plans.
Organisations dotted along the line are signing up and the non-profit body which promotes the line, the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership is appealing for more people to get involved.
Richard Burningham, manager at the partnership, said: "The Maritime Line is hugely successful, with passenger numbers doubling since 2009, and I hope we can make next year's 150th anniversary celebrations a big, varied event with as many people involved as possible.
"We are particularly looking for people who would like to get involved in organising activities to be part of the programme."
Steve Lloyd, chairman of the Friends of Penmere Station said: "2013 is a double celebration for us ^ 150 years of the railway and 20 years of our group. My particular hope is that we see steam return to Falmouth as part of the festivities."
