A Bristol-based First Bus driver has died with coronavirus.

Martin Egan died on Saturday, March 28 after falling ill with Covid-19 two weeks ago.

First West of England's managing director James Freeman said: “Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his family and friends.

“Martin was a hugely respected member of our team and I know this will be devastating news for his colleagues and customers that got to know him over the years.

He started as a driver at our Muller Road depot in 1980 and then moved to our Lawrence Hill operation later in his career," Mr Freeman added.

“Personally, I will always remember his huge smile when we recently launched our new gas buses in Bristol. His presence around the depot will be greatly missed.”

Sympathies to the family of Martin who was performing a job to the public to get key workers to and from their places of employment. R.I.P.

First Bus statement on when driver who died of coronavirus last worked

Supervisors, managers and other drivers are now in self-isolation
First Bus has confirmed details of when a Bristol employee who died with coronavirus last drove a bus.

Bus driver Martin Egan, who was based at First's Lawrence Hill depot, died yesterday (March 28) after falling ill with Covid-19.

A First spokesman said he last drove a bus on March 13 and was taken to hospital with symptoms of the illness on March 18.

Asked how First had identified people who had been in contact with Mr Egan, the spokesman said: "Those identified included supervisors, managers and drivers he’d been in contact with in the depot and drivers who had driven before and after him."

Those staff members have since been in self-isolation.

Earlier today, First West of England's managing director James Freeman said: “Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his family and friends.

“Martin was a hugely respected member of our team and I know this will be devastating news for his colleagues and customers that got to know him over the years.

“Martin last drove a bus more than two weeks ago, before he was taken ill.

"We have identified those that we understand had come into recent contact with him, including supervisors and drivers, and they have since been in self-isolation."

'Tremendously loyal'
Mr Freeman described Mr Egan as a "tremendously loyal employee and a great character", who worked for the business for 40 years.

"He started as a driver at our Muller Road depot in 1980 and then moved to our Lawrence Hill operation later in his career," Mr Freeman added.

“Personally, I will always remember his huge smile when we recently launched our new gas buses in Bristol. His presence around the depot will be greatly missed.”

Public Health England has been approached for further information.
