Do the 387's have anything substantial behind the front fibreglass(?) valance to take the buffing force when they hit the stops, or is serious damage easily done (like on my car)?

I think all the Electrostars (and Turbostar) variants have similar structural steelwork and anti-climb features as those visible on (for example) the front of Desiros and the modified 458s, but Bombardier chose to cover it all in sacrificial GRP. I believe the Voyagers are similar, you can see a sort of rectangular shape to the body styling at the lower 'corners' of the train, and the heavy duty steel is right behind it.
