1  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: Railway based walks website. on: Yesterday at 06:53:25
I have done a few of these, although former railway lines and canals tend to be my preferred routes. My knees were never keen on hills and definitely not nowadays.

Did the Blackwater Valley last year, absolute swamp although probably worse for the youngsters doing their Duke of Edinburgh's. Tends to be spoilt by the roar of the adjacent dual carriageway.

Sometimes you find interesting nuggets during the daily grind.

Recent offering from DfT» (Department for Transport - about) https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/land-use-and-transport-planning-dft-science-advisory-council-paper/land-use-and-transport-planning-dft-science-advisory-council-paper interesting in it self at first, but have been gripped by the reference within it to the Buchanan report; Traffic in Towns https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_in_Towns. Not often government reports are republished as Penguins. Same era as the Beecing report. Seems a prescient view of what was to come.

Not sure my eyeballs would stand 250 odd pages on the Internet Archive, but the Penguin might be of more interest in the second-hand market.

Newbury is an example quoted.

Better get back to earning a crust.

I think there is an element of the old adage

KISS (keep it simple, stupid!) - Keep It Simple Stupid

Working in the NHS I have long had an interest in Risk Communication, both written and verbal (recalls situations with head in hands going NO NO NO to oneself)

It is always difficult, but clarity and honesty are important.

Confusing or misleading messaging only raises doubt in the travellers mind, reduces the credibility of the messaging organisation, and gives ammunition to the climate change deniers.

Were the tavern cars one of Bulleid's carriage designs?

Remember in the days of the old licensing laws, introduced so that production was not reduced in the world war, the afternoon closing did not apply on market day. There used to be one bus into Fakenham market in the morning and a very merry bus home in the evening. Somebody used to hire horse-drawn gypsy caravans for holidays. Apparently if you didn't make an obvious decision where to go the horse would automatically do a tour of the local market days.

Always good to see a Bulleid Pacific. In general, did he ever design a duff one apart from the infamous Leader class?

Similar in supermarkets; the people who design and "program" checkouts probably never do the shopping!

Is the situation with politians the same, most of what they legislate on is some theoretical construct?

I do wonder if planners ever use the facilities that they want to remove or create.

I think we have another thread on this topic. I must admit I have trouble finding previous threads when I am posting something.

there are several river Avons

Avon in the celtic languages, Welsh etc, means river. So there are quite a lot of River Rivers.

You could use the excuse it was in the Hungerford sanitary district (c. 1872) which extended over the county boundary to include Bedwyn!
13  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: Difficult to argue with e-bike/scooter rules? on: April 10, 2024, 07:00:05
I must admit that my initial concern was that it appeared that the bike was about three steps from being able to board a train. Had it done so the result would not have been so photogenic.

This happening in a train or bus doesn't really bear thinking about https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-london-68744317

E-bike and e-scooter fires are the fastest-growing fire risk in London: statistics indicate there have been at least 40 this year.

I don't feel the current situation is going to change soon

https://road.cc/content/news/cycling-tunnel-closed-again-due-flooding-307683

Am interested how they managed to do it despite English Nature Natural England shouting BATS (as opposed to Great Crested Newts). Another former railway tunnel in Wales has gone ahead despite the Welsh equivalent playing the bats card, although it is shut part of the year during the bat breeding season.

The South Downs National Park are going through all sorts of contortions over the tunnels on the Chichester - Midhurst line, alternative suggestions hardly suitable for manual wheelchair users who are not paralympians. Is it a case that BANES was prepared to face down English Nature and a National Park feel they can't.

UPDATE: correct name of quango
