Many years ago I spent some months working in the area and remember standing under the bridge when trains went over head. Even with a 2 car set the noise was not deafening but very loud and guess this is hardly surprising given the construction

My own opinion is its a worthy nomination

I fear that being a world heritage site might hinder repair, maintenance, and upgrading.
IIRC (if I recall/remember/read correctly), the Great Western Main Line is also a world heritage site, and this fact was an argument against electrification and provided ammunition to the NIMBYs in their fight to prevent electrification, or at least to render it slower and more expensive.

Despite my concerns about windy weather, I am on balance pro-electrification, and don't like to see the costs inflated by the heritage lobby.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Not listed here, I think it was only ever an unlikely proposal:  http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/gb

Does anyone know if the plans to open a visitor's centre on the North bank and install a viewing platform for the public on the top of the first tower are still happening?  It might have made sense to get it listed as a WHS (World Heritage Site that is, not a stationery shop) AFTER that had been done
