Quite apart from the folly of suggesting a 12% reduction in standard class seating at a time where some leisure trains are already packed to the rafters, I'd love to see a crayonista make that work as an actual working design!

No problem,  GWR (Great Western Railway) are experts at making that happen. GWR promised "more seats" for Portsmouth - Cardiff, they did manage that.............with 5 abreast seating rolling stock instead of 4 abreast !!!!!  The fact that most of these "extra" seats are unusable by normal sized human beings - we'll ignore that.  Average journey time London to Swansea is about 30 mins less than Portsmouth to Cardiff..............could almost manage 6 abreast seating for that short trip  Cheesy

I would say that GWR are trying to emulate Ryanair - but they are actually way ahead already. Michael O'Leary has merely floated the idea of having standing passengers on his Boeings - GWR have already achieved that on most of their trains already.

You are correct in what you say….. except a lot of the decisions aren’t GWR’s. They are being micromanaged by the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) and have been for many years.  The DfT calls the shots, they are the ones dictating what happens.

The DfT says the Castle sets have to go. No replacement sorted, stretch the fleet as thin as it’ll go and make it work. This will become more and more apparent.

A shame you were also one of our regular posters who were unable/unwilling to directly question the GWR MD with your concerns last week.

You are correct in what you say….. except a lot of the decisions aren’t GWR’s. They are being micromanaged by the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) and have been for many years.  The DfT calls the shots, they are the ones dictating what happens.

Not sure it is DfT  I suspect the decision is made in the Treasury who of course know so much about everything we wonder why any other government department exists.

I would suspect that questions have been asked from GWR (Great Western Railway) to the DfT» (Department for Transport - about).

Should we invite Mark Harper to a "Meet the Secretary of State" session?

Their diesel mileage percentage must be quite a bit lower. 

You don’t really notice an engine out on a 9 or 10-car service anyway though.  You do notice if two or more are our, but that’s fairly rare IME (in my experience).

LNER have two sets with an engine isolated, but as IndustryInsider said, they spend most of the time under the wires.

You notice 1 engine out on the steeper gradients on the network and where linespeeds are 100/110mph.

Having checked around with the moderator / admin team (onto whom the organising would fall), we have gone ahead and sent an invite.  It was actually quite a useful exercise in defining the Coffee Shop to an expert newcomer.

This service is making extra stops and picking up passengers (somehow I don’t think it will) from the cancelled 08:35 Plymouth-Paddington. What a time for this to be a 5 vice 10 if JC is correct  Roll Eyes
