I've only just been made aware of this charity auction offering many experiences to raise money for the Railway Benevolent Fund. Only two days left to bid.

https://go.eventgroovefundraising.com/railwayfamilyweekauction/Campaign/Details

A varied selection of experiences to bid on. From a Routemaster ride with Sir Peter Hendy driving, cab rides on the Caledonian Sleeper, behind the scenes station visits, playing with Pete Waterman's model trains at his house, driver training simulators, visits to ROCs (Rail Operating Centre - a centralised location for railway signalling and train control operations for a specific route or region), Network Rail helicopter flight, and many more.

Just wish I could afford to bid for some of them.

...which is why I much prefer a fundraising ballot with a charge for entering (which might vary between experiences) rather than an auction. The website describes the experiences as "money-can’t-buy" but that just means that you can't get them off the shelf; it still comes down to being able to afford quite a tidy sum. I assume overall they find the auction approach brings in more than everyone paying a smaller amount to enter, so understandable if the aim is to raise money for charity but still disappointing for those of us who can't enter.

Some of those (most?) will go for several thousand smackers, so it's no surprise really.
