556  All across the Great Western territory / Diary - what's happening when? / Re: Imber bus day, Salisbury Plain on: August 17, 2019, 12:11:18
London Transport's 4TC unit, topped with a Class 33 and tailed with a Class 73 leaves Warminster this morning, for Westbury, after dropping off its passengers for this year's Imberbus event.
Warminster Station was very busy, a lot of people arriving by the service trains as well as the charter.

Pragmatically, couldn't that still earn you a Penalty Fare if you sit in First Class with it ?   Wink
I think so but what happens if you want to upgrade by excessing the fare?

According to the "rules" I assume you have to sit in Std Class until your ticket has been upgraded. Which goes against what the "rules" say about getting a Weekend First on the train.......perhaps you only get a Penalty Fare Mon - Fri if you sit in First with a Std ticket ?
558  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Seatfrog comes to GWR on: August 15, 2019, 10:23:55

Pragmatically, could you not have just bought the cheapest Standard class ticket and explained/excessed it on the train?

Many thanks for that. If I follow the times for tomorrow correctly, I will look for it at Heywood Rd Jct at 1930 (ish). Westbury White Horse hill with my 600mm lens might be a good bet.
I'll keep an eye out in 5 weeks as well for a visit to Warminster.

Just happened to see this going into Warminster this afternoon - going Salisbury direction. Was hoping that it might be coming back a little later, but RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) told me it wasn't. Is there anywhere that might give advance notice of another visit from this unusual train ?

Our new OHLE is ugly, but very resilient!

I think I have fathomed out the real reason for the huge amount of metalwork for the OHLE. When they decide that Brunel's GWR (Great Western Railway) no longer has the "capacity", they won't have to widen/relay the existing track - two new lines can just be laid above the existing track supported by the ironwork that is already there. Simples !
