I've just been on 2 of the Modern Equivalents of the Merrymakers from Slough to Fishguard and Telford both from Slough by
UK▸ Railtours. Fare and dining probably more expensive than the Merry Makers.
Also note in ticket display is a Mystery Tour. Went on one once from Slough to Coventry in a 9 car 117 went out via Worcester and up Lickey Incline.
Also another one, not sure if was a Mystery Tour or an Excursion to York from Slough which went via Bordsley to Derby and then up the Midland Mainline from Sheffield via Normanton and Castleford to York. Now severed as through route. Can't remember stock.
Then, in the 1980s, there were the ‘Network Days’ and the Persil voucher scheme, exchanging them for rail tickets,
Network Days were great. Chasing the remaining loco hauled starting off with the Cross Country from ? via Slough to Dover getting off at Bromley South. Then Liverpool Street Cambridge/ Colchester, Lewes to Milton Keynes, Milton Keynes back to Euston, Cross country via Reading. On the final one chasing 50's on the Exeter's. The latter trains were packed and the drivers entered into the spirit of the thing by thrashing them.
