1  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Class 150 on Reading - Basingstoke line on: November 03, 2011, 19:34:11
FGW (First Great Western) have been doing gauging tests with an ex.London Underground class 150 (150 130) DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) betwenn Reading and Basingstoke because they want to free up some Network Turbo units.
2  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Now a bad website: on: July 02, 2011, 19:29:17
Is it just me but the new FGW (First Great Western) website is not as good as the last one. Before, it had the live service updates section on its homepage which was excellent for people who had slow internet connection so they could have a quick glance at the page and can tell wheater or not their train was either delayed, changed or cancelled! Now, you have to click another hyperlink to get the live depatures.
3  All across the Great Western territory / Your rights and redress / Re: New Sprinter trains?? on: July 02, 2011, 19:20:16
If new DMUs (Diesel Multiple Unit) are to be built, then I feel that serious consideration should be given to hybrid drive (diesel/battery).
In order to give reasonable performance, a diesel train typicly needs from about 300 up to over 500 HP per vehicle.
This much power is required in order to give good acceleration and to ascend inclines at an aceptable speed.
The average power needed is much less, but the heavy and expensive engines need to be sized for the peak power required, not the average.

Instead, one could build a 4 car hybrid multiple unit with say 350HP engines under 2 coaches only, with electric transmission as on voyagers.
The other 2 vehicles would be fitted with traction motors of say 400HP short term rating and suitable batteries.

That would give 1,500 HP for a 4 car set and ensure ample acceleration. The electric motors would only be required when accelerrating away from stops and ascending gradients. The 700 HP from the diesels being sufficient to maintain line speed on level track, and leave a modest surplus for battery charging.
Whenever the train is stationery or coasting, allmost all the engine power would be available for battery charging.
When braking, regenerative braking would be easily achieved, saving fuel and brake wear.

Only 2 engines need be purchased and maintained, and these 2 engines would run for longer periods at their most efficient power output.

On routes with many stops and lower speeds it might be possible to shut down one engine, since a single engine would charge the batteries during the many stops.

4  Journey by Journey / London to Didcot, Oxford and Banbury / More trains for Banbury to Oxford: on: May 21, 2011, 19:46:47
At the moment intemidiate station between Oxford and Banbury:
Tackley > Heyford > Kings Sutton
are getting a train every two hours. There is one train operating only and the whole journey takes less than half and hour.
To incourgae more people to travel in and fro the intimediate stations, there needs to be a more frequent service.
5  All across the Great Western territory / Smoke and Mirrors / Refurbishment of Class 150/1 sets from London Overground on: May 21, 2011, 19:30:25
Why are the class 150/1 sets from London Overground not refurbished as well as the Wessex Trains class 150/2's? The 150/1's have the high density low seating as well as now table seats which is horribly uncomfortable and the low seating means you can't look out of the window as well. It is also quite dim.
SO, FIRST GREAT WESTERN, IF YOU ARE REFURBISHING THE UNITS, DON'T DO HALF THE JOB, DO THE FULL JOB!
6  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Ashford Int - Penzance? on: May 21, 2011, 19:24:10
There should be a train every  to Penzance from Ashford/Dover every two hours. What do you think? Becuase, it is very difficult for passengers from the South East who want to travel to the South West. Only route is:
1. Ashford Int-Eastbourne
2. Eastbourne-Lewes/Brighton (Trains continues to London or Brighton)
3. Brighton-Barnham/Ford (train continues to Littlehamton or Bognor)
4. Ford/Barnham-Portsmouth
5. Portsmouth-Westbury/Bristol
6. Westbury/Bristol-South West England
Therefore you have to change 6 times or more.
Thats absolutely pathetic. I don't mind changing once or twice but 6 times, carrying baggages with you (maybe 2 or 3 suit cases or 2 or more children - even worse).
7  All across the Great Western territory / Your rights and redress / New Sprinter trains?? on: May 21, 2011, 09:57:19
I think that the whole country incuding the South West of England need more Sprinter Trains. The ones that work at the moment are not very efficient and train making companies should invest in new cheap trains like Sprinters. What I mean by that is that the trains will have the same design (interior/exterior) as the normal sprinters/super sprinters (class 150 - 158) as well as having more coaches (from 2 coaches to 3/4 coaches - centre cars).
8  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Campaigns for new and improved services / Re: Campaign for Tavistock reopening on: April 29, 2011, 21:46:27
Tavistock will be a popular destination for walkerts, biologists, e.t.c. so they must reopen it. Hopefully, FGW (First Great Western) is thinking about it.
9  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Re: I want more trains, services, ETC on: April 29, 2011, 21:43:09
I like your thinking Jim and I wish it would happen! Also, I must add they must have hourly services from Oxford to Banbury calling at all stations to and fro Oxford. This includes Tackley, Heyford & Kings Sutton. Our service is so bad.
