The feeling i get is that the government are spending money on wasteful things rather than the things that are needed,

Like what?
3542  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Campaigns for new and improved services / Re: Campaign to reopen Didcot to Southampton railway on: July 28, 2013, 20:11:13
Having read one of the links on their website which reviews the trackbed between Didcot and Newbury (http://www.geograph.org.uk/article/The-DidcotNewbury-and-Southampton-Line), it seems that more of the North Section has survived than I had thought.

However I think that south of Newbury most of it is under the A34.

The new viaduct at Reading is designed to provide additional capacity on this route.  A restored DN&S would need a flyover junction at Didcot as well as a new route from Newbury southwards.

Once Reading is done surely the capacity problems are Didcot to Oxford and the route from Basingstoke through Winchester to Eastliegh. The promoters correctly identify the alternative route for this section as from Salisbury through Romsey.  If there is capacity between Whitchurch and Salisbury then surely an improvement between Basingstoke and the Junction between the Salisbury/Winchester lines (sorry forgotten its name) would be much cheaper than reopening the DN&S to Newbury and a new route from Newbury to Whitchurch.

Really people need to look at the Passenger rather than continually at money, as you have to invest in rail services now and in future years to come, and i don't agree with anything else sorry.

I didn't realise we were in a position where government could fund everything that needed doing regardless of cost.
3544  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: One less HST stopping at Maidenhead from August 10th - pm? on: July 28, 2013, 19:46:16
Well Jo if thats what it happens to be like, then maybe FGW (First Great Western) really need to sought out the aircon on the Turbo's. I mean what really is wrong with fixing a problem that is simple.

That does presume that the problem is simple.

I think that Adelante's and HST (High Speed Train) should run on more fast services, then the whole thing about travelling in comfort will be over, or so I think. At the end of the day if First Great Western cannot be bothered then why are they still continuing to run rail services? Only thing is will other operators be any better, probably not.

Yes more HST's and Adelantes would really be good on a many parts of the FGW network - not just Maidenhead. Do you know where there are that might be going spare?  Or are you expecting X Country, Grand Central, Hull Trains, Midland Mainline and East Coast to have spares that they don't need?  Basically we need more rolling stock across the board.

However, bear in mind the HST were not built for services that have frequent stops.  When they were introduced on GW (Great Western) in the 70's it was expected that they would have limited stops.  They are now working all stops west of Reading most of the time.

Oh the joys of rail privatisation, i hear people say BRING BACK BRITISH RAIL, if only that ever will happen Smiley

Yes lets bring back the British Rail whose policy was to cut services to drive away the passengers so they could save money by taking out capacity - a form of managed decline.

correct. That of course is a Conservation Area.

Sorry my brain does not work on Sundays - I have amended it now
3546  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The West - but NOT trains in the West / Re: Listed Signal Boxes on: July 28, 2013, 13:34:17
If I understand your point correctly, I don't think there is any 'planning process' involved in demolishing an unlisted signal box.  Their removal would be a permitted development under the original Act setting up the railway - it would come under normal maintenance activities.

Paul

Unless a building is listed or in a conservation area I do not believe any planning permission is required to demolish - only to build something else.

Didcot to Southampton railway to re-open

Quote
Campaign to reopen Didcot to Southampton railway

RAILWAY enthusiasts are hoping to reopen a long-closed Hampshire railway line.

The Didcot to Southampton Railway, axed in the Beeching cuts of the 1960s, ran through Newbury to Winchester which is connected with the mainline at Shawford.

Rex Hora, chairman of Didcot, Newbury & Southampton Railway Revival, said the predicted increase in freight traffic meant that the idea was feasible.

Mr Hora admitted that much of the track has been built on but that in the long-term it will be needed to cope with the growth in freight traffic between Southampton Docks and the Midlands.

He said that although the Southampton-Winchester-Basingstoke-Reading line has been upgraded for larger containers, it still has only two tracks so its capacity is limited.

Once the former line is re-opened for freight there will be the opportunity for direct passenger services between Oxford, Newbury and Winchester, without the need to go via Reading.

Mr Hora said the priority was the northern section between Didcot and Whitchurch.

He said: ^In an ideal world we would like to open the whole line. South of Whitchurch we might have to go for a detour via Salisbury.

^The main argument is freight traffic from Southampton to the Midlands. At the moment it goes through Winchester but the line is nearing capacity. They are either going to have to consider upgrading to four tracks or having a separate route, perhaps via Salisbury, at some stage in the next couple of decades.^

Chris Webb is a member of the Friends of Hockley Viaduct which campaigned for the viaduct south of Winchester to be restored and reopened for public use.

Mr Webb said: ^It^s far too late. Much of the track bed has been obliterated, by the Newbury bypass, the A34 at Litchfield near Whitchurch and at Kings Worthy. At Bar End there is the Chesil multi-storey car park and the Stagecoach depot.

^To recreate it now would be very difficult and very expensive. I think it is a dodo.^

I fear I must agree with the last comment.  It never should have been closed, but it was never run as a through route for freight or passengers. It was always run as a branch line. So it never achieved its potential.

If you want a separate route the Midland & South Western Junction from Swindon to Andover might be a more practical bet.

3548  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: One less HST stopping at Maidenhead from August 10th - pm? on: July 26, 2013, 07:55:51
Not all of us and not 3 weeks all at the same time I guess? Does that happen in other towns then?  Roll Eyes

If it's hot in August.. And since I don't want to be fried to death.. the HSTs (High Speed Train) are my only option that makes it certain that I won't be for those three weeks if it turns out to be a little warm during that time

It is the case that during the peak times in August there are noticeably less people on trains around where I live and although most do not have 3 weeks they stagger their holidays throughout the school holidays so the reduction is over a longer period.

Its usually a shock when the holidays end and the trains are more crowded again!

And no excuse for no communication anyway

Agreed
3549  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: One less HST stopping at Maidenhead from August 10th - pm? on: July 25, 2013, 23:10:53
Do the people of Maidenhead who commute into London not have holidays or do none of them have them in August?

Perhaps the school holidays in Maidenhead are different to the rest of the country?

Or could it be that there will be fewer people wanting to travel between Paddington and Maidenhead at this time?
3550  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Campaigns for new and improved services / Re: Carmarthen and Aberystwyth on: July 24, 2013, 23:55:33
As the promoters are Carmarthen based, it's natural for them to look on the route from their town.  How about the alternative Builth Road to Moat Lane Junction - much shorter and you might get a link from the Cambrian coast back up to Bangor too for about your 50 miles.   Reconnecting Caernarvon (pop 10,000) to the main rail network, and joining all three of the railway sections in Wales.

Yes - these all very long, speculative shots.   "Not in the foreseeable future", but then who would have foreseen 30 miles of railway coming back to Galashiels, pop 12,500, when the Waverley route was closed?

Builth Road to Moat Lane is about 35 miles.  Still be a circuitous route though!
3551  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Changes to cycle policy - 3/4 Aug 13 on: July 22, 2013, 23:22:39
Each person arriving by bicycle is probably one less car in the mostly-overstuffed car parks. It's rather irritating First train operators are so awful at accommodating bicycles, both at stations and on trains. Why is it? It's not like First Bus is competing with bicycles as First Bus usually fail to coordinate with the trains in my experience (Weston-super-Mare)...

I agree that FGW (First Great Western) and other companies should make more effort to provide secure cycle storage at stations with equal or greater priority than car parking.  I am not sure about on trains though.  They do take up a lot of space - something we are very short of on trains these days. The cost of this provision is not covered by additional fare income. The provision made therefore has to be limited.

Was it beyond First to arrange a few cycle specials for Ride London?  Hook a few extra guards vans onto that locomotive and coaches set that did Taunton-Cardiff (not seen it recently) or something. After all, the event's only been planned since a few years before the Olympics.  No, instead they take a page out of Southern's awful London-to-Brighton "How to Annoy Passengers" book.

The railway just does not have a few spare guards vans around for easy hire.  They did in the old BR (British Rail(ways)) days but those times have long gone. I am not saying it cannot be done, but it is not a trivial task and will not be cheap.  I assume that the additional passengers would want this service for just the cost of an ordinary (off peak) ticket.
3552  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: HOOP - High Output Overhead line equipment Plant - coming to Great Western on: July 21, 2013, 22:19:24
Diesel has no long-term future in any kind of transport, let alone public transport.

Totally agree

A diesel-powered electricity generator at Avonmouth makes much more sense than importing diesel to power a train, if only because it is more efficient than a wind farm.

It depends how you define efficient.  If you mean the proportion of energy you get then it is not.  But if you mean CO2 per kWh then wind beats diesel easily.  If you want to talk about cost per kWh then do you mean at today's electricity and diesel prices or future prices?  All very difficult to determine.

..makes much more sense than importing diesel to power a train, if only because it is more efficient than a wind farm, more likely than a biomass plan where we import some wood from the USA and pretend that the ship emitted nothing  on the voyage.

That never made any sense to anybody other than a politician.  I know some politicians are said to have brains the size of planets, but I have never seen much evidence of it myself.

It might also make sense to a civil servant, with a first class degree in ancient Greek literature, who is put in charge of energy policy.
3553  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: HOOP - High Output Overhead line equipment Plant - coming to Great Western on: July 21, 2013, 21:14:04
And as for rail electrification on a wider scale than currently funded/proposed - think how much more we could do by ditching HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)).

Yes we could electrify all the lines so that as a country we were not so dependant on oil. But then with the growth in traffic the West Coast Main Line, the East Coast Main Line and Probably the Midland Main Line would have such appalling reliability statistics that there would be an outcry and there would be no room for freight.

Then when oil becomes so expensive that it rules out road transport we would not be able to move goods or people around the country so the economy would collapse even though we had electrified all the lines.

Think how well we coped when there was a fuel strike in 2001?

All this talk of runaway trains seemed to me like something from the long past (Armagh 1915 1889 came to mind) and I though continuous fail safe automatic brakes were the result.  I have three questions:

1) Are continuous automatic fail-safe brakes a requirement on all trains in the UK (United Kingdom)?

2) Is this the case elsewhere?

3) Do these still apply when the train is parked and the engine turned off?
