A teenager has been killed near a rail crossing in South Wales this morning, it is believed.

It is understood the boy, believed to be of school age, was struck by the Cardiff to Aberdare train at around 9.30am today.

British Transport Police (BTP (British Transport Police)) and South Wales Police officers were called to the scene near Abercynon Road, Ynysboeth, in the Cynon Valley.

A BTP spokesman confirmed a male had been pronounced dead at the scene and officers are working to identify the body.

He said: ^BTP officers were called to the rail line near Abercynon Road, Ynysboeth, on Monday, 10 January 2011 following a report of a person being struck by a train.

^BTP and South Wales Police officers attended the incident and discovered the body of a male.

"Welsh Ambulance Service paramedics also attended but the male was pronounced dead at the scene.

^The incident was reported to police at 9.33am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

^Officers are currently working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the person came to be on the tracks, and anyone with information is asked to contact BTP on Freefone 0800 40 50 40.^

A sad incident indeed, thetrout. Sad

From the BTP (British Transport Police) press release:

Quote
Following the death on Monday 10 January 2011 of 16-year-old Jack Elliot Stephens, of Ynysboeth, his family has today paid tribute and released a photograph via British Transport Police.

Jack died after being struck by the 8.41am Cardiff to Aberdare train on the railway line near Abercynon Road, Ynysboeth, at around 9.30am on Monday 10 January 2011. His death is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

In a statement issued today by British Transport Police, Jack's family said the teenager would be sadly missed. The family said: ^We have been devastated by this tragedy and the family is rallying round to support each other at this very difficult time. Jack was a loving, dedicated son, grandson, brother and friend to those who were fortunate enough to have known him. He will be sadly missed by the entire family and we would all like to thank all of our friends and family members for the love, support and kindness they have shown. We would now ask that the media respects our privacy and our need to grieve on our own as we continue to come to terms with our loss.^

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
