From the Daily Mail: Britain's cash-strapped motorists were warned today that sky-high petrol prices are set to hit ^1.20 a litre by the end of the year. Pump prices on forecourts across the country have increased by around 20p a litre since the start of 2009, adding ^11 to the cost of filling up an average tank. But if prices continue to rise at their present rate then the average cost is likely to be around 105.5p by the end of August with another 2.3p in fuel duty added from September 1.
Motoring organisations say that the latest hikes, triggered by the escalating cost of crude oil, are expected to return prices to last summer's record high when oil peaked at 147 dollars a barrel. The warning is another blow to commuters, who have already been forced to tighten their belts. Millions of rail passengers were told they face a 20 per cent jump in fares next month, after First Great Western pushed up the cost of some of its cheapest tickets.

... but, on the other hand: also from the Daily Mail - and posted only an hour earlier: Oil price slips below $62 a barrel and could fall to 2002 lows
Oil prices slipped below $62 a barrel on Friday in Asia as investors weighed mostly positive second quarter corporate results against signs of sluggish crude demand.
Benchmark crude for August delivery was down 27 cents to $61.75 a barrel by late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
On Thursday, the contract added 48 cents to settle at $62.02.
Some believe the recession will force down oil to prices last seen in 2002, at around $20 a barrel.
It perhaps goes to show, one shouldn't believe everything one reads in the papers ...  |

I'd avoid quoting the Daily Mail - journalism at its worst! Although I'm not looking forward to the higher cost of filling my tank, I do believe that petrol taxing is the fairest "road" tax, as the more you drive/ the less green your engine, the more you pay. Of course, then you open the can of worm about those who have no choice but to drive... |

I drive as little as I can get away with - last summer it was over ^100 to fill my tank Yes - I do have a pick up but as I live half way up a hill which involves driving through a small river/fford to get to my drive then a 4x4 is needed - and since I run a limited company, a commercial vehicle is the obvious choice. However, even limiting my road miles - once the cotswolds line reopens ill be back to a tank of fuel a week The only advantage of going from ludlow is filling up once a month :-( If only I could get to reading for 0830 from ludlow - I'd pay the higher price for a via newport season |

So how's petrol getting along in its quest to make it to GBP1.20 by Christmas? I've lost track seeing as here it's all sold in funny units called gallons and priced in a funny currency called dollars.

There was a report in the Times a couple of weeks ago about several independent oil carriers offshore from Devon just sitting around waiting for the price of oil to rise before they deliver to the UK▸ , and their "loot" was rising by thousands to millions over the past couple of months. Apparently even OPEC was looking to increase production to reduce the price of oil again and stick 2 fingers up to these cowboy profiteers... (and that's before we look at the Governments disgraceful role in petrol prices ) |
