GWR (Great Western Railway) drivers absolutely do not sign Canton anymore. In addition, only a few select Gloucester West drivers sign the Lydney route. Swansea and most of Bristol HSS (High Speed Services) sign Lydney but not 158s.

I don’t see what the unions have to do with anything.

Nice photos. Good to see the progress. I’m hoping to have a look around for myself later this evening.

Just as a point of interest, the lines at this location are titled the ‘Up Filton’ and ‘Down Filton’, not the Up & Down Main.

"Meltdown Monday"

The day the rail industry belatedly planned engineering works and scheduled trains ... then within hours of them being due to run changed them again because they find (taken by surprise?) that they don't have the crew available.

Is this a lack of joined up thinking, a false dream of a a great crew room full of staff, incompetence, or planned to let people down in two more gentle steps rather than one big step?

Train crew rosters are should be published to traincrew 5 days in advance.  Once they have been published that's it, they can't be changed, unless the driver or TM(resolve) agrees.  All the company can do is change the content of the diagram within the published booking on and off times.
Traincrew also get 5 days notice as to whether their leave has been granted.  If a driver is available for rest day working and hasn't been booked out they can be asked at anytime whether they want to work.

Of course, the more a member of traincrew is willing to be moved at short notice the more they get favours back in the future.

RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) will be rubbing their palms with glee. A perfect opportunity to call strikes.

How about the railways sort out Sunday rostering before attempting to find staff to run overnight services.

Why would RMT be desperate to call a strike? Surely more trains = more staff = more subs for the union.
66  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Marlborough Branch? on: April 21, 2018, 05:35:17
With regards to Hullavington/Malmesbury, you’ve got the issue of there not really being any suitable trains passing through the location which could feasibly stop. You’d need some fast EMUs (Electric Multiple Unit) to keep out of the way of the 4tph that will be using that stretch non stop pretty soon.

Apologies for not keeping in the topic of Marlborough, that area isn’t my strong point.

The first two diagrams are certainly intended to be 9 car 800s.
68  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Bristol Resignalling - from Bristol PSB to Thames Valley Signal Centre on: April 19, 2018, 02:32:39
It looks like a signal has been provided on the London end of Bristol Parkway platform 1. Presumably this means it will be possible to route trains from Filton/Cardiff through Platform 1 and out the other side towards London. I originally thought it would be a fixed red signal just for reversing moves back to Filton/Cardiff but it appears this isn’t the case.
All the lines through Bristol Parkway will become fully reversible (including the Up Passenger Loop and Down Goods Loop).  This will happen during the F4T commissioning later this year (2018).  All these lines will be accessible from the London, Filton Abbey Wood, Patchway and Avonmouth directions.

Thank you for the information! Of course, the Up passenger loop is already fully reversible Wink

The line speed has dropped from 25 to 10 into platforms 3-12.
