31  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Alstom and Eversholt to hydrogenate class 321s on: January 16, 2019, 16:50:17
Quote
A tweet by the editor of Rail Engineer magazine says hydrogen trains require 3 times as much electricity as an electric train and 8 times the fuel storage volume of a diesel, for the same energy store.

So, in summary-

1 - You only get two coaches of accommodation in a three coach train
2 - They cannot routinely run through tunnels for safety reasons, so on GW (Great Western) could only run on the Thames Valley branches (not North Downs - tunnel south of Guildford) or east of Chippenham. Even in flat East Anglia, there's a tunnel just south of Ipswich!
3 - Vast amounts of electricity required to produce the hydrogen

I'm not sure "Breeze" is an appropriate name - perhaps "BRitish EXperimental Innovation Train", which shortens nicely to something else topical.....

Electrification now!

So really no good between Cardiff and Portsmouth.

Remember the furore over the OHLE through Goring?  Well this is the outcome, from the Henley Standard:

"LANDOWNERS in the Goring area can apply for grants from Network Rail to improve plots that adjoin the Great Western main line through the village.

The company is offering sums of between £10,000 and £100,000 to offset the impact of the electrification of the route, which started in 2015 and prompted complaints about the “unsightly” metal gantries that were installed to hold up overhead cables.

Network Rail promised to consider installing alternative designs but progress stalled as opponents said these wouldn’t reduce the visual impact. Now the company says it wants to support any projects which would result in new woodland being planted, enhance existing woodland or improve access between wooded areas.

The deadline for applications is October 26 and applicants should be able to deliver their schemes over a four-year period.

For more information, visit www.trustforoxfordshire."

Found this?. Why do they not cover them over in gwr railway colour green paint, that would disguise them from the residents. I expect B - Q have got some offers on cheap paint.

The problem with gas on trains in the past has been what happens in an accident if the tanks or connecting pipes are ruptured in an accident.  Was it Quintinshill where we learnt that lesson?  And are we now to forget it?

There was a programme on tv some months ago, that I watched and it showed an old wooden carriage train explode, after the gas tanks on the roof ignited. The tanks powered the lighting.

Because we are coming out of Europe now it seems, Are Network Rail going to have to abandon E.R.T.M.S. Also confused as to what it is, but sounds ever so expensive.

We could do, but since the main manufacturers will be making all their products ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System.) compliant - as a large number of the customers will require that - it will probably be more expensive in the long run to abandon it here in the UK (United Kingdom). To specify non-standard products would add expense.

...and who would actally manufacture any alternative system?  We don't have any such manufacturers in the UK now  Roll Eyes

Why don't unipart?. They are making other signalling systems.
Unipart don't manufacture anything.  They are a supply chain organisation.

Didn't they used to supply car parts at one time?. the only one I knew, closed down.

The Brexit thing rattles on again, looks like were going to get a no deal.

When will the remaining signalling works be completed to bring into use the two way working of platform 2 at FAW?.

Asked about again.

Yes, some of the items in that. I have already talked about in other threads. Like the two tracks for Melksham. All we are waiting for now is somebody to put a bomb under NR» (Network Rail - home page) to get them started.

That's Grayling with a capital 'G'

Sorted.

Volo TV Ltd never turned a profit before going out of business. Passengers wanted power sockets and WiFi instead.

Never knew they were a company supplying a service, always thought they were a company that just made the monitors.

Apparently, this report is based on the recent All Parliamentary Rail Group meeting last week in the Copmmons. Does Hansard record these Group meetings?

Could I please ask members if they would check spelling of messages, before they hit the post button, I have seen many mistakes in this forum over the past few weeks, I try to make my posts as accurate as possible. I usually post a message and re edit, if I see a mistake.

Not known yet if he does.

I did permit myself a wry smile coming from someone who litters their posts with "should of" instead of "should have".

Correction, perhaps that will now change, only going on by what I was taught at school.

Perhaps several could be coupled together and equipped with a small engine, pacer replacement ?

Decent seats and a buffet too?

Yes, plus those old tv's back that we used to have in coach D on the HST (High Speed Train)'s, they were good and are now sadly missed.
43  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: Transport secretary - on subjects beyond transport on: January 15, 2019, 13:17:03
I See it as Chris Grayling worried about other parts of politics, such as Brexit, He looks very worried in case we have a no deal Brexit.
44  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: Transport secretary - on subjects beyond transport on: January 15, 2019, 13:14:17
And we have started to come close to personal picking on each other ... let's desist from that temptation, shall we.

T'will always happen if you open a discussion board to full-on politics....hence my request to at least keep it on-topic (transport-related)

But it is not transport related is it, I see it as subjects outside transport as in its heading?.

Could the tanks explode in very hot weather?.
