Passengers evacuated along track.

Evacuation after only a few hours, is this a change of policy after the previous "keep them on the trains no matter what"

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

I think it was probably the only real option at the time. On previous occasions a Class 57 has been used for dragging the Class 345s and 387s away when there has been a failure of the overheads or there has been train to train evacuations. That wasn't an option this time because of the industrial action on GWR (Great Western Railway).

As it stands there is still going to be disruption in the morning, looking at Open Train Times there are a few units (2xHEX and 1xTfL) that still need to be moved, whether that be under their own power once it's switched back on or by being rescued I'm not sure as it'll depend on how the units have been left.

The relief line appears to be clear though, so the positive is that there should be some sort of service in the morning if Network Rail have been able to shorten the isolations of the overhead line without issue.
